Catherine 'Kate' Murray

Catherine Murray was the daughter of Mary Tinneny and Patrick Murray.  She was born  in 1900 on the Murray family farm at Derrykenny, Newtownbutler, County Fermanagh, Ireland. Catherine was baptized at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Newtownbutler. She was raised on the farm and attended the Wattlebridge School and Saint Mary's Church.

 

Kate married James Toland of Lurgan, Co. Armagh, on December 6, 1920 in Lurgan Roman Catholic Church in the Shankill Civil District, and the couple had 13 children.  After their marriage the couple lived in Lurgan and Manchester, England where they raised their family.

Kates husband James served in the Royal Irish Fusiliers in World War I and was wounded at the battle of the Somme.

According to her son Andy, while home in Ireland to visit her sister Maggie about 1980, Kate returned to the ruins of her mother and her Granny Tinnenys homeplace in the hollow on Goladuff.  At the time she was in her 70s.  He said, she was taken there by boat and was helped to the site of the homeplace and as she was leaving the site she took a stone from the ruins of the house and brought it back with her to her home in Manchester, England.

James died May 11, 1975 in Manchester, England and was buried in Dougher Cemetery, Lurgan, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. His son Andy lives in Lurgan and tends the grave.

Catherine died December 27,1990 and was buried in Southern Cemetery, Manchester, England with her son James and his wife Constance, sons John Patrick and daughter Ethna and grandson Damian Toland.

The marker was later modified to include the flat marker referring to Daniel, the son of Catherine and James whose remains are interred in Australia and the grandson Damian son of Catherine and James son James.

Catherine's descendants include Toland, Price, McCavigan, Donoghue, Flowers, Cope, Putland, Caldow, Reilly, Gerrard, Cumbo, Corcoran, Yarwood.
