Kellan is the son of Chris and Cyndi Steele Harrod of New York City. He is scheduled to graduate from the Special Music School High School in New York City June 21, 2019. Kellan applied to universities in the United States, London, Scotland and Wales, which resulted in an offer to attend the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, Scotland. In the fall of 2019 he will enroll there in the Music/Theatre/Acting Program. There were 6,000 applicants for the program and Kellan was one of eighteen students selected. He will be the only American in the class.

While in high school, Kellan surprised his parents when he informed them that he wanted a career in the theater as are his parents and his brother Dalton. As a senior in 2019 he was a Presidential Scholar of the Arts Semi-Finalist. In addition to his parents his grandfather John Steele and his grandmother Catherine “Kitty” McColgan Steele were heavily involved in theater.

Kellan is the great-great grandson of John McColgan and Mary Jane Tinneny of Greenock, Scotland and Philadelphia and the great-great-great grandson of Patrick “Yankee Pat” Tinneny of Goladuff, Newtownbutler, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland; Greenock, Scotland and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and his wife Margaret Malloy.
