John
Patrick Toland, although under age, left home in Ireland
when he was
17
years old
and enlisted in the British Army for service in World
War II. He was assigned
to Hendon,
London for training. His cousin, John Toland who was his
physical Training Instructor reported him for being
under age and he was discharged. The following year he
again enlisted and qualified as a sharp shooter and was
assigned to the 5th Regiment of the Royal Artillery. He
served in combat in
Holland
where he was wounded. He was evacuated to London for
treatment of shrapnel wounds and recuperation and
discharged.
John
was the son of James
and Catherine Murray Toland, grandson
of Patrick
and Mary Tinneny Murray of
Derrykenny, Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh, Northern
Ireland and the great-grandson of
Mary Tinneny of
Goladuff.
