John Patrick Toland, although under age, left home in Ireland when he was 17 years old and enlisted in the British Army for service in World War II. He was assigned to Hendon, London for training. His cousin, John Toland who was his physical Training Instructor reported him for being under age and he was discharged. The following year he again enlisted and qualified as a sharp shooter and was assigned to the 5th Regiment of the Royal Artillery. He served in combat in Holland where he was wounded. He was evacuated to London for treatment of shrapnel wounds and recuperation and discharged.

John was the son of James and Catherine Murray Toland, grandson of Patrick and Mary Tinneny Murray of Derrykenny, Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and the great-grandson of Mary Tinneny of Goladuff.
