Andrew "Andy" Toland
is the son of James Toland and Katherine Murray and the grandson of Mary
Tinneny of Goladuff and Derrykenny, Newtownbutler, Northern Ireland.
He was born in Lurgan, Northern Ireland and raised there and in
Manchester, England. Andy enlisted in the British Army in
1947. After training at the Preston Fullwood Barracks, he was assigned to the
Royal Irish Fusiliers and further training with that unit in the barracks at
Omagh. He was then assigned overseas where he did tours of duty in
Palestine, Egypt, Aquaba, near the Red Sea, Gibraltar and Germany.
After serving in the army for six years Andy left active duty and
remained in the reserve forces for a time.
