Thomas Tierney was born in New York City and like his brothers Francis and Robert he fought in the European Theater of Operations in World War II. He entered the United States Army Air Corps and served as an aircraft maintenance specialist with the 456th Bomb Group in Italy during the war and held the rank of corporal.

Thomas was the son of Francis and Catherine Reilly Tinneny of Belturbet, County Cavan, Ireland and New York, the grandson of Thomas and Bridget Gilmartin Tinneny of Belturbet and the great-grandson of Francis and Anne Elliott Tinneny of Belturbet, County Cavan, Ireland.

Note: The surnames of Francis and Catherine Reilly Tinneny were changed from Tinneny to Tierney sometime after arriving in America.  Their children and their descendents were subsequently Tierney.
