Myfanwy “Van” Brember, the wife of Peter Brember of
Stalbridge, England, received an Honorary Bachelor of
Education Degree. The degree was awarded September 5,
2025 by The University of Gloucestershire at the chapel
of Francis Close Hall Campus, Cheltenham,
Gloucestershire, England. Van earned a Certificate in
Education at the University in 1977. The honorary degree
was awarded in recognition of the contributions she made
to teaching & learning throughout her subsequent career.
In addition to husband Pete, their son Daniel and his
wife Amrita attended the presentation ceremony.
Following graduation in 1977, Van started her teaching
career in Yeovil Somerset, England at the Milford
Infants School where she worked for 8 years until she
had her son Daniel. She then became a stay at home mum
until daughter Hattie was ready to start school. Van
then undertook supply teaching in the local area for a
couple of years. When the family moved to Stalbridge,
Dorset, she joined the teaching staff at the Primary
School, initially working full time in the Reception
class with rising five year olds.
When
deployments took away her husband Pete, an officer with
the Royal Navy, she worked part time supporting children
throughout the school with special needs. During that
time she earned an Oxford Cambridge RSA Examining
Certificate in SpLD (Specific Learning Difficulties
Dyslexia.)
After 10 years at
Stalbridge Primary, Van worked full time as a traveling
special needs teacher with Dorset Local Education
Authority based in Dorchester. There she earned a OCR
Diploma in SpLD which enabled her to carry out
assessments as well as teaching individual programs for
children between 5 and 16 years. During her time with
Dorset LA she also worked with boys who had been
excluded from mainstream schools including those with
ASD, ADHD & Language Difficulties. This is the work she
found most rewarding. She retired from her last post in
2012.
